Ormskirk 4th 36 Carrington 2nd 14
Ormskirk 4th team claimed their place in the next round of the Halbro Plate with a win over Carrington 2nds last Saturday.
Having to play the game on neutral ground due to pitch availability, it was ‘kirk who settled the quicker into the game and were first to draw blood.
From the start of the game ‘kirk’s forwards took it upon themselves to dictate how the game was to be played. The Ormskirk pack controlled line-outs, mauls, rucks and scrums without much competition from Carrington. McDermott, Jonsson and Wallwork providing the immovable brick wall front row which allowed Jonsson ample opportunities to steal Carrington’s ball at the scrums.
Worthington, Jacobs and Styles gave ‘kirk the attacking platform needed from the back row and with Fogarty standing in at 9 it was on the cards that it was to be a day for the forwards.
Notwithstanding the forward’s domination, the effort from ‘kirk’s backs was tremendous in both attack and defence. Fletcher linked well with his centre partnership of Petterson and Lee and wingers Lyon and McCluskey ran their socks off all day long, with the back up of Bailie at full back. Half time score 29 – 7 to kirk.
Carrington’s army of supporters were all donning match shirts and a number of substitutions were made. However even though they brought 11 substitutes only 5 were allowed but this didn’t deter the visitors as they implemented a few crafty changes unseen by the ref, who to be fair had a relatively firm grip on the game.
Carrington replaced their entire front row in an effort to stop the ‘kirk machine from doing more damage to their already dented pride. But this was to no avail. Kirk continued to dominate proceedings, but found it somewhat difficult locating the try line in the second half. Despite best efforts from ‘kirk they could only manage one more try in the game to win 36-14
