In preparation for next weeks EFE cup match Ormskirk 2nd team played a friendly against Rossendale, who arrived with a small team clearly ready for a good game. In recent weeks the players and coaches have worked hard to perfect individual player skills and overall team play; in this game the hard work came to the fore with a magnificent game of team and individual play.
From the drop out Ormskirk were ready for the game and penalised a Rossendale mistake to force some early pressure with some excellent scrumaging, the ball fairly zinging out to the backs to attack the Rossendale 22. Rossendale found it very difficult to cope with the attacking pace of Ormskirk and it was not long before the pressure resulted in a penalty which Jack Calveley converted to gain the opening points. From the drop out Ormskirk once again attacked and applied the pressure on Rossendale. An excellent move saw Tom run in his first of three tries with a powerful run using excellent pace. The gates began to creak open. The first half was dominated by Ormskirk who using good set pieces and movement of the ball blitzed the Rossendale 22. The try of the half belonged to Jo Perry who used his power to run straight at the Rossendale pack, offloading in the tackle with excellent an  pass, this in turn was moved to Tom who using a nice shimmy and angled run moved the ball over the line. By this time the gates had crashed open and Ormskirk began to find gaps and run through to score. Mention must be made of some individuals, Bryn worked very hard for the team as flanker and was a constant menace to Rossendale spoiling what ball they had, as was Tom ‘the tiger tank’ Nixon who powered his way over friend and foe to attack the ball. To be honest the first half was a joy to watch, one glorious movement involving forwards and backs saw Johnny Evans show just how far he has developed as a player with a powerful run up the wing, looking for the offload and support that he had outdistanced.
Â
The second half started with the coaches making several changes, moving players to new positions and introducing new players. Lewis playing his first game for the club enjoyed the Ormskirk domination by running in six tries, one try was started in the Ormskirk 22 with a turnover ball, passed out to Louise who powered his way the full length of the pitch to score. The lad has the build of Ben Kay with the running ability of Linford Christie. The second half was totally dominated by Ormskirk 2nd team who showed their true potential with some excellent play. It was significant that majority of the tries were scored by the backs, something the coaches have been working on for some weeks. By the end of the game Ormskirk had racked up their biggest ever win, with no tries against in a game they dominated from start to finish. To be fair to Rossendale they never gave up and at the end were seeking to score and get something from the game.
Â
I would need more space to talk of individual performances, as rugby is a team game it is important and fitting to emphasise how this game showed what a good team they are and have become and how well they can play.
