Ormskirk 4th 25 Colne and Nelson 2nd 7

Ormskirk 4ths played hosts to Colne and Nelson 2nd team at Green lane this weekend and came away with another league victory in a performance to be proud of. Although the score-line wasn’t huge, the performance and effort and sheer grit and determination ensured that ‘kirk would not be beaten in this fixture.

The forwards, led by captain Wallwork, worked tirelessly to secure possession and territorial advantage against a strong and organised pack. (Even though the visitors pack contained 3 Ormskirk players! Credit goes to Terry McDermott, Dave Selfe and Paul Waywell for playing for the opposition).

‘Kirk’s Line-outs provided the starting point for positive driving rugby with Peter Styles looking deadly in the air. Mauls were well controlled with Andrew Dean and Dave Worthington adding their valuable experience from the back row. The home team’s backs settled into the game quickly and soon exposed weaknesses in the visitors’ defence. The centre partnership of Jacobs and Lee seems to be gelling nicely as their interlink play was second to none. Wingers McCluskey and Jones both relished their opportunities with ball in hand. Full Back Justin Lyon played what was probably his best game of the season so far as he dealt with everything that was thrown at him by the visitors.

It was ‘kirk who started the game brighter and had taken a strong hold on the game when Lyon crossed the line after only 5 mins of the game played. And it wasn’t long before ‘kirk extended their lead when Brian Green Crossed the whitewash after a bulldozing run by Petterson allowing Green the space and the opportunity to score.
Kirk added a third try when Adam Lee brushed aside all challengers and calmly crossed the line for his 8th try of the season. Kirk lead 15 – 0 at half time.

As the second half started Nick O’Donovan seized his opportunity from the restart and drove his way to the line, only for his efforts to go unrewarded as he was deemed to have been held up over the line. All was not lost as from the resulting scrum Worthington picked up from number 8 and slid in under the posts for his second try in successive weeks. The visitors did respond with a try of their own from a powerful rolling maul. So with the score at 20-7 ‘kirk were set for another victory but kirks backs had other ideas. The ball was shipped quick time down the back line to the hands of Lyon who crossed for his second of the day to cap an outstanding individual performance and round off a great team victory.

Ormskirk will travel to local rivals Chorley next week brimming with confidence.
