Ormskirk RUFC’s Tag Rugby Tournaments are in danger of being re-classified as a water sport, such is their well-deserved reputation for attracting rain. And it was no different last Saturday when teams from West Lancs, Sefton and Wigan splashed out on to a sodden Green Lane to contest the Wandering Trophy. But the enthusiasm of the children was undiluted and they provided a thrilling morning’s entertainment for the spectators.
It was obvious from the closely fought Group Stages that there were at least five teams capable of lifting the trophy but, in the end, it was Nicol Mere from Bryn and Christ Church, Aughton who won through to the final. Christ Church, who have not won the trophy for a number of years, won through 6 – 4 in a compelling Final.
Uniquely the Fletcher Fair Play Trophy was awarded to a team who weren’t even present. Aughton Town Green were given the trophy to recognise their achievement in reaching the County Final at the Lancashire Youth Games, where they lost by the narrowest of margins but did West Lancashire proud.
