A game of promise against a side equally matched to Ormskirk was eagerly looked forward to by coaches and supporters alike.  The forwards coach Del Salisbury was keen to try out his new training grid and the team responded well to the pre-match warm up and were very keen to get into the action.

At kick off the team drove forward and took the game to Sefton who could not cope with the power of the Ormskirk forwards.  A sense of purpose was evident in the team and initially they caused a great deal of disruption to Sefton, good rucking and mauling was evident.  The first scrum resulted in Sefton being pushed back, indeed all through the game the forward power was too much for Sefton to cope with.  Ormskirk took the lead when following excellent play Ormskirk camped on Sefton line and Olli Thorburn heeding the training took the points with an excellent and well taken drop goal.  Things were looking good but some bizarre decisions by the referee allowed Sefton back into the game and they pounced to take the lead.  The forward play of Ormskirk was nothing short of brilliant, Sefton however were able to exploit gaps to score some good trys.

The second half was very much like the first.  Jack Calveley showed his class play with a surging and driving run into a pack of Sefton players.  He seemed to disappear only to appear with the ball to drive over the line; Jack then converted his own try.  Ormskirk played their hearts out but were undone by some excellent running by Sefton No 8 who exploited hole to score, and some dubious decisions by the official.  To be fair Sefton themselves were on the receiving end as well.  Not to be downhearted Ormskirk came back and some excellent play from the forwards resulted in a second try for Jack Calveley.  At the end of the game Ormskirk may have lost but they could walk from the pitch with heads held high.

The game was dominated by some excellent individual performances, Chris Mitchell played his best game of the season, Jack once again played his heart out and Olli Thorburn showed his class.  Praise must be said of two new players Tom Beecroft and Jack Williams who showed enormous promise and potential.

Sefton made the players, coaches and parents very welcome and enjoyed the game in the spirit it was played and would like to play the team again, and hopefully if this comes off we can reverse the result.
