Ormskirk 4th XV 11 Pendle 1st XV 43
Ormskirk 4ths recent slump continued this weekend with a defeat at home to the hands of new-comers Pendle, who proved to be better than most teams ‘kirk will face this season.
Unsure of what to expect from the new team in their league ‘kirk were set to make the game a tight affair utilising their strengths in the forwards.
However with only minutes on the clock ‘kirk came unstuck as it became apparent that Pendle’s game plan was much different to the home sides. Pendle used slick passing to their backs to stretch kirks defence time and time again.
The visitors were the first to get on the score sheet with a well executed try in the corner. But kirk were not going to take this lying down and attempted to gain a foothold in the game with their forwards playing close tight rugby.
Kirk where awarded two penalties in quick succession, both of which were slotted home from the boot of Mark Ballie. But just as kirk were looking to turn the game around, Pendle, as they frequently did all afternoon, broke Ormskirk’s back line and ran in a number of tries.
Kirk bravely fought on but too little reward. That was until two minutes left of the game when from a 5 metre scrum, winger Damien McCluskey stepped inside, collected the ball from the scrum half and crashed his way over the line for kirk’s only try of the day.
A valiant effort from kirk with the score line flattering the visitors slightly.
