Ormskirk RUFC hosted their 24th Primary Schools’ Tag Rugby Tournament last Saturday and 17 teams from local and not so local schools sent teams along. For once it wasn’t raining.
Tag Rugby is well established in local schools now and the Mini & Junior Section
( MJS ) continue to work hard to spread the game further through the activities of the Primary Schools’ Liaison Officer and the Community Coach. 75 % of the children playing for the MJS, from Under 7 to Under 12, come from Primary Schools that play Tag Rugby.
As usual the standard was very high and we can be confident that, once again, whichever school represents West Lancs at the County Championship next term, they will mount a strong challenge. West Lancs has provided five finalists and four winners in the last five years.
On Saturday both the Cup Semi Finals were decided by a single try, as was the Final & the 3rds v 4ths match. Any of the four semi finalists could have won the Cup. The final placings were as follows :-
CUP 1st Ormskirk CE
2nd Tarleton Holy Trinity
3rd Town Green 1
The Fletcher Fairplay Trophy was won by Rufford CE for their effort and sportsmanship.
BOWL 1st Nicol Mere 2
2nd Newburgh 1
3rd Pinfold 1
PLATE 1st Nicol Mere 1
2nd Asmall 1
3rd St John’s CE
Many thanks to all the dedicated teachers of West Lancs who give up their time to run Tag Rugby clubs, and on this occasion, their Saturdays, so the children can play the game.
And many thanks to all our volunteers. We won’t list them. There were 22. They know who they are. Special thanks to Blackie for forgetting he’d volunteered and staying in bed. If he’d turned up the kids would have been terrified. Having a hobbit
( Bruce McKinnie ) on one touchline was disturbing enough, but to find a troll looking for his lunch on the other would’ve freaked them out entirely. He may be a vegetarian, but he doesn’t look like one.
One final financial note for those of you who think that Tag Rugby is somehow a drain on the Club’s resources. Jenny Baxter, at the Bacon, Banger & Brew Babestation, raked in 300 quid in takings.
