2nd XV Match Report – 30.09.06

Winnington Park 14 Ormskirk 24

Ormskirk Raiders fielded a team with few changes since their victory last week over Warrington. After a long journey away to Winnington Park this week the Gingerbread Men started to warm up and prepare for the game in hand. From the off Ormskirk dominated up front and played some great running rugby football.

Ormskirk took an early lead through the boot of Jamie Wroe, who kicked three penalties for the away team in the first half. The pack all play well especially man of the match Val Gateley , with the scrums being particularly solid and providing a platform for the backs to play great attacking rugby. Winnington, aided by a few choice decisions by the referee scored a lucky try against the run of play, Ormskirk’s defence wavered gifting their opponents a further try and conversion before resuming their dominance on the game. Half time came not a minute to soon for Ormskirk, presenting an opportunity for the skipper Ged Dawson to rally the troops and refresh the game plan. After the half time break Ormskirk worked hard both in defence, some try saving tackling from Little and attack with the pack grinding the ball forward with great success, with Bramwell and Buckston making yards admirably; which left the backs to capitalised on the space, in particular Keech and Webb playing out of position. The hard work paid off and Ormskirk took the lead once more with tries coming from Hopley and Keech. Wroe prolific with the boot converted one try and added three points to the tally with a penalty. The final whistle brought a close to a game that was a little more one sided than the 14-24 score to the away team, would have you believe. A third win in a row for the Ormskirk 2nd XV who look like they could do very well this season, if they continue playing in this manner.
