Sunday 22nd Feb 2009 Ormskirk v Littleborough (Under 9s)

Posted by: Monty on Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

With ‘Kirk still looking for that elusive first ‘headline’ win we came to
this match full of hope and from the kick off went forward with confidence,
rucking and cleaning out well and retaining the ball through 3 or 4 phases
pinning the visitors in the last 1/3rd of the pitch. This early pressure paid
dividends with an early try from Liam, who forced his way through some hard
tackles to score a fantastic and well earned try for the home side.

Littleborough far from gave up and put up a spirited challenge but continued
to make simple mistakes and give away needless penalties helping Ormskirk
gain good territory, from a forced knock on near half time Kirk were awarded a
scrum in the visitors half. Scrum Half Owen Travis picked up from the base
and went on a blind side run dummying and side stepping his way to the try line
to give the home side a 10pts to nil half time advantage.

In the second period the opposition kept up the pressure but continued to
make fundamental errors handing advantage regularly back to our boys, they came
close to crossing the line on two occasions but were brought back for
‘handing off’, they eventually did score a consolation try 1 min from the end but
following the “attack is the best form of defence” ethos, Ormskirk prevented
Littleborough from leveling the score. Once again spirited attack play with
excellent support and great cleaning out at the ruck brought fully deserved
success to Ormskirk under 9’s & with it their first headline victory by 10pts to
5.

Clearly the ‘W’ went to their heads and the second game went the other way
and Littleborough won by 15 points to 5, our points coming from a hard worked
try by prop ‘Granty’, the score doesn’t do justice to the effort put in by
Ormskirk’s players, especially as we only had 9 on the day and were forced to
play 8 a side to keep 1 player rested.

In the 3rd game our boys were visibly tiring but put up a tremendous fight,
the visitors took an early lead and almost immediately went 10 nil up, holding
this advantage to half time. They scored again early in the 2nd period and
it started to look like a walk over for them with our rucking going all wrong
and them driving over our ball regularly. Slightly against the run of play
‘Kirk scrum half Owen scored having picked up from a ruck, ‘rolling’ out of a
number of tackles to score a memorable long distance try. Littleborough
knocked on shortly after their re-start and once again Scrum Half Owen picked up
from the base and this time carrying three of their players the last five
metres & over the line for his best try of the day. This made for an entertaining
last 2 minutes but the score finished Ormskirk 10 Littleborough 15

All in all a great and educational day for Ormskirk Under 9’s, next week
away at Tarleton…. Bring it on.

Players, Eddie, Owen, (3 tries) Granty (1 try) Christian, Liam, (1 try) Ben,
Matty, Adam, Charlie (our player of the week)
