Match Report – 24.09.06
Ormskirk 2nd XV 15 Warrington 2nd XV 0
After a disappointing start to the season The Raiders faced an in form Warrington outfit with a 100% record to their name. ‘Kirk made their intentions clear right from the whistle with a crunching double tackle from back row Davis and second row Bramwell, leaving the Warrington player wondering what day it was. Unfortunately ‘The Enforcer’ Davis suffered a gash to the head resulting in hospital treatment. The big ‘Kirk pack won solid first phase ball with the line-out combination of Bowling and Bramwell performing particularly well. A series of ‘pick and go’s’ led to skipper Dawson being held up just short after a typically dynamic burst for the line. Shortly after ‘Kirk won a penalty in the oppositon’s 22. Fly half Keech slotted the 3 points comfortably.
Warrington rallied and from a ruck their fly half broke the gain line and put his inside centre away with only the full back to beat. Peter Pan full back Little manoeuvred his opponent into position and made a crunching tackle, scrum half Hopley stealing the ball and clearing the lines. Warrington continued to press through the backs but their attacks were snuffed out by the makeshift Ormskirk back line with ex Ormskirk School 1st XV captain Webster particularly solid in defence. The first half was cut short due to an injury to the Warrington inside centre requiring paramedic attention. We wish him well.
Ormskirk came out in focussed mood for the second half. With Keech kicking well for position ‘Kirk dominated territory and soon began to apply pressure. Good continuity resulted in Webster releasing Little who demonstrated a master class in beating his opposite number one on one to score under the posts. .Keech converted. ‘Kirk began to dominate upfront, notably in the scrum with the fresh legs of Litherland, putting ‘The Wire’ on the back foot. ‘Kirk kept the ball alive well, demonstrating good support play and offloading in the tackle especially from flanker Prescott. The match was wrapped up by man of the match Keech, selling a double dummy with his centres and going through the gap to score.
A good performance from the 2nd XV which should kick start their season. They have demonstrated that they have the ability to compete competitively in this league.
