Leigh u13s 24pts - Ormskirk u13s 24pts
On a bright sunny day, made for open rugby, both sides did not disappoint a large crowd and put on a great show to round off the season.
Leigh had knocked Ormskirk out of the Lancashire Plate at the semi-final stage and the Green Lane boys were in a mood to redress the balance as the conditions suited their game perfectly. From the kick off it was evident that Ormskirk were going to throw caution to the wind and play rugby of a Barbarian nature. In the first minute swift handling and backing up sent Eddie Webster away for a wonderful try. Back came Leigh as the game swung one way then the other (as it did all morning) and their powerful No.6 picked up from a scrum and broke away down the blind side to score in the corner. Ormskirk continued to run the ball at every opportunity and again great support play from forwards Alex “Cecil” Fairhurst and Brad Spencer, together with great awareness from Chris Boylan put Gavin Griffiths away for a great try.
Ormskirk had their tails up and from the kick off it just got better, the kick went straight to Eddie Webster and as he charged towards the Leigh forwards, a gap opened up akin to the Red Sea and he waltzed through to score, with Griffiths adding the extras. In their excitement to attack from anywhere, Ormskirk committed a sin in their own 22 with a poor pass, scooped up by Leigh’s marauding No.6 who nipped in to steal a converted try. A dubious decision gave Leigh a put in at a scrum deep in the Ormskirk 22 and from it they scored again, with their speedy centre sidestepping his was over for another converted try. 19-17 to Leigh at half time.
The second half, whilst still very entertaining only brought a try to each side. The home side scoring from a well-worked forward drive form a tap penalty. Ormskirk’s was another typical team effort following great hands in the backs, a break from Liam Peate and a ruck from which Webster broke off to sprint way and score in the corner. Griffiths’ excellent conversion tied the scores, and after an agreement between the coaches, the referee was instructed to bring the game to a halt with honours even. A fitting way to end the season - a great game between two sides that respect each other both on and off the pitch.
