Ormskirk u14 29pts - Broughton Park u14 17pts
Ormskirk won this game without playing particualrly well, but still had too much for a spirited team from Broughton Park
Indeed the visitors came to Green Lane in confident mood with 5 wins and no defeats under their belt. This was the first time the two teams had ever played each other and the opening encounters were scrappy, but from broken play Eddie Webster did what he does best, scooped up the ball and crached through three tackles to score. This was added to by Gavin Griffiths who followed up a great run from George Lightfoot, to go over in the corner.
Another forward drive saw the ball pop out to winger Chris Boylan, who showed great awareness to move the ball out to the supporting Lightfoot and then on to Griffiths for his second. 17-0 at half time looked comfortable, but the visitors, down to 14 after a yellow card for foul play were not down and out.
Even so, Griffiths sprinted away early in the second half to put Ormskirk 24-0, Dunn with the afters. Just as the crowd waited for a deluge of points, Broughton Park came right back into the game with two quick tries as their pack began to gain the ascendency, particularly in the scrum. It was now a different game and Ormskirk were in danger of falling apart, but the backs exercised a well rehearsed move in the centre, releasing Griffiths, who shot down the blind side to score in the corner. From a breakaway and good kick downfield, the visitors threatened to score again and would have but from some good cover tackling from the Ormskrik backs. They did get a score right on full time as Aidan Charlton brilliantly defended a kick ahead as last man, unfortunately his mates weren’t quick enough getting back and Broughton muscled their way over to leave the final score at 29-17.
With next week’s crucial Lancs Junior Challenge match against Fleetwood, it is important for the forwards to gain an early advantage, as with a good share of ball the Ormskirk backs are a match for any side.
