Costly errors detract from a much improved display

The second game of the season found the under 15s second team in excellent spirits following their win over Aldwinians and the 1st team route of Blackburn.  The coaches have been working the team hard and putting in a great deal of effort and this is beginning to show and is appreciated by the team.  The second team at present have a strong and capable forward line up and this is now showing, not least in this game.

Preston came to the game with a strong line up and from the drop out Ormskirk took the game to them, the forwards showing their strength in attacking the ball.  The first scrum was won against the head, always a good psychological point.  Some excellent rucking and mauling by the forwards was spoilt by an error which allowed PGH to run in a try against the run of play, indeed all but one of the PGH tries was against the run of play.  Ormskirk put in a good response and the pack took the game to PGH who found it difficult to cope with Ormskirk, resulting in a penalty brought about by good pressure, which was converted.  All through the game Ormskirk put in some fearsome scrumaging and rucking resulting in clear ball for the scrum half to pass it out to the backs.  All through the first half PGH were contained in their own half and the only negative point was the failure to capitalise on the pressure, indeed the tries conceded by Ormskirk all came from break a ways.

Towards the end of the first half Jack Freeman broke out and scored an excellent try for Ormskirk, as only Jack can.  Following half time changes Joe Perry when he came on showed his potential by engaging in some surging runs, with PGH having to commit 3 players in some cases to tackle Joe.  This pressure by the forwards was yet again spoilt by PGH scoring a try from an error by Ormskirk.  However, such is the growing belief in Ormskirk 2nd team they came straight back at PGH who again became camped in their own half.

Ormskirk finally got their reward their play deserved, Adam Killeen accepted a  pass and made an excellent run with a feinted pass to score a very well worked effort.  Adam is growing adept at spotting these gaps and exploiting them.  It was only towards end of the second half that PGH played in the Ormskirk 22, such is the growing confidence of the team and the pressure the forwards can exert, from this they managed to score their only worked try of the match.

Overall the game highlighted several areas of strength for Ormskirk, the forwards were magnificent today and to single one player out would be an injustice to the others.  The pack played their hearts out and attacked all over the pitch.  Tom Sinclair deserves a pat on the back for stepping up to take pressure kicks, well done Tom.  One important aspect to the game was the sense of sportsmanship it was played in, both teams had a magnificent game and enjoyed playing the game for the game.
