The third game of the season found the under 15s second team once again in excellent spirits despite losing to PGH last Sunday. Dave Kidd a highly qualified coach took charge of the team today ably assisted by Graham Rawlinson and Mal Woods.
Fleetwood are known as a tough team to beat and on arrival it was plain to see that today they had a strong line up, with some very capable looking backs. From the drop out Ormskirk exerted some good pressure and took the game to Fleetwood. Some excellent play by Ormskirk was spoilt when Fleetwood stole the ball and exploited a gap to send their attacking backs thorough for a try. Ormskirk put in a good response and the pack took the game to Fleetwood who found it difficult to cope with Ormskirk. However, Fleetwood contained Ormskirk and pounced on an error to once again exploit a gap and run a try in. Ormskirk did not let it affect them and came back strongly, with some excellent play from the team. The referee seeing a knock on from Fleetwood player stopped the game, despite Michael Cropper deftly picking the ball up and being in position to score a try, the referee did apologise in not allowing the advantage. All the hard was eventually rewarded with a well worked try; the forwards constantly moving the ball and setting it up resulted in an excellent try from the promising Jack Calvery who powered is way over the line. He then converted the try to put some points on the board. All through the first half Fleetwood found it difficult to get into Ormskirk half, the only negative point was the failure of Ormskirk to capitalise on the pressure and allow Fleetwood to break out to score.
The second half saw Ormskirk make some changes and once again take the attack to Fleetwood, who responded by capitalising on isolated players and mistakes in running the ball at Ormskirk. Jack Freeman played a great game as full back and ran his heart out, but even Jason Robinson finds it difficult to stop a 2 on 1 situation. Fleetwood began to put pressure on Ormskirk who by this time were running short of breadth and they began to control the game. Matt Evans, despite playing like a terrier, could not rally the troops for the last quarter. At the final whistle all players could congratulate themselves on a great game of enjoyable rugby. The coaches and parents appreciated the effort each player had put in and both teams warmly applauded each other at the end.
