The under 12’s travelled to Preston Grasshoppers with a weakened squad last weekend -though this gave the coaches an opportunity to cast an eye over a couple of new players to the team.
As always Preston fielded a massive team in terms of weight and height and they dwarfed the Ormskirk team in every position. In the first half Ormskirk were overawed by the size of the opposition and were soon 21 points to nil down. However the lads soon got stuck into the game and very quickly started to realise that when they started to play rugby they were more than a match for the Preston team. Soon the forwards were winning plenty of good ball and just before half-time newcomer Graham Bishop galloped away from the back line to score an impressive debut try for the club.
In the second half Ormskirk dominated the game and a try apiece from Robbie Jones and Tom Povey converted by Matt White left the game delicately poised at 21 points all. Just as it looked like the game would end in a well deserved draw a last minute drive to the line by the Preston pack resulted in a try with the very last move of the game. The sense of dejection was there for all to see and a game we could so easily have won was snatched away.
The coaching staff although disappointed with the result were highly delighted with the efforts of every single player and are now beginning to see the rewards of a lot of hard work on the training pitch. The next game this weekend against Manchester at home is now eagerly awaited and with a squad of around 30 players, competition for places is now starting to hot up.
