In the 6th round of the group stages of The Lancashire Cup, Ormskirk made their way around the M60 to face their old foes Broughton Park still smarting from their defeat to us in last season’s semi-final. With recent games being so tight a close encounter was envisaged with the added bonus that the winner would end up as top of the group and as a reward would have home advantage in the quarter finals.
Ormskirk started well and were soon on the attack. It was obvious from the outset that Broughton were pumped up for this contest and this was evident in some very committed tackling. Unfortunately Ormskirk were soon a try down. A speculative kick by the Broughton winger caught the wind and Matt White at full back couldn’t take it, it bounced up nicely and the winger picked it up and raced away to score.Ormskirk came bouncing back and for several minutes really asked questions of the opposition defence without managing to get that all important score. Finally Broughton cleared their lines and from a line-out near the ‘Kirk line drove over for their second try of the game. After this the game got a little scrappy until Broughton did a nice little chip and chase and from the resulting line-out scored a similar try to their second. With just seconds to go Ormskirk worked themselves into an excellent position, the ball moved wide to the wing but some brave last ditch Broughton tackling prevented a try.
Half-Time   Broughton Park  15    Ormskirk 0
At the start of the second half Broughton again dominated proceedings and after Ormskirk were penalised twice in swift succession for holding on at the ruck the opposition moved the ball wide to go in for their fouth try. To give credit to Ormskirk they came back into the game and after Broughton were caught offside at a ruck, a quick tap penalty by Robbie Jones released No.8 Olly Hogan to burst through and score. Broughton were not finished however and after some intense pressure scored their fifth and final try with a conversion to put the icing on the cake.
Final Score  Broughton Park 27   Ormskirk  5
After an impressive start to the season the Under 13’s came crashing down to earth with a dose of reality today. On today’s performance Broughton deserved their victory as they were more committed, made fewer mistakes and took their chances well. Ormskirk on the other hand were lethargic, missed too many tackles and made far too many basic handling errors. One of the few players today to stand out from a disappointing performance was flanker Kyle Hoy who never stopped working and tackling all match. Ormskirk must now move on from this game and focus on the winner takes all game against Old Aldwinians in 3 weeks time to see who will get the second and final quarter final spot in this years Lancashire Cup.
