Ormskirk U14s 49pts - Consett U14s 10pts
Ormskirk welcomed the tourists from the North East, played some great rugby and thoroughly entertained an appreciative crowd in a game played in a fantastic spirit by both sides.
Ormskirk’s plan was to play a simple style of rugby - win the ball and give it to the backs. It worked very well and seven tries followed. From a line out on half way, the ball found its way to centre Eddie Webster who simply burst past three defenders and scored, Chris Nicholson adding the extras. Then ,from some poor defensive work, the home side conceded a penalty near the line, and Consett used one of their enormous pack to drive over for a good try. Back came the home side though, and from a scrum, quick hands put Webster into acres of space and he repeated the task to score, Nicholson adding two more. Ormskirk began to run the ball from all over the field and from a scrum near their own line, quick hands to Webster and a flick inside to Griffiths put Gav clear - the rest as they say is history, as he went 70m for a typical score, conversion from Nicholson followed.
Good possession from a ruck in the Ormskirk half saw the ball again handled well to Nicholson down the blind side, he danced his way past numerous defenders before turning on the burners and sprinting clear, needless to say he popped another conversion over. The forwards were having plenty of success in the loose, so much that No.8 Aidan Charlton found himself in the backs, so he threw a dummy, stepped inside and then accelerated through to score, Chris did the honours again.
Ormskirk made many changes at half time, both personnel and positional and the flowing rugby continued with Simon Brazier having a number of strong runs on the wing, but never quite getting enough space to use his pace. Dan Bailie had fun at fly half as he cut through the defence on numerous occassions, but the final pass, or the support didn’t develop the good opportunities. Ormskirk then tried one of their champagne rugby moves and the ball flew from Jack Morris-Holland to Webster who ghosted through a bamboozled defence to score. He rounded off the home side’s tally by accepting a loose tap from the Consett lineout and diving over, Chris Nicholson converted for wide out for a perfect 7 from 7.
Consett did rally in the dying moments and scored a consolation try as the forwards stuffed the ball up their jumpers and drove over the line.
A good work out for Ormskirk, but everyone is well aware that Sunday’s Plate Final against Vale of Lune will be a far tougher proposition. Ormskirk will go into the final as underdogs but confident that they are in a rich vein of form.
