Under 7s - Amazing at Altrincham 16.3.08

Posted by: Allan Rees on Thursday, March 20th, 2008

With almost half the squad  having gone to bed very late the previous night, and with memories of the battering we took from them last time we met, we journeyed to Altrincham filled with a sense of dread – our guys need a good night’s kip to perform!!

Dodger had slept over at Persuader’s, who’s snoring had kept him awake. Lightning’s sleep was disturbed by the girly giggles coming from his sister’s sleepover. Swerver only made it home at 1.30 am and Power House, also at a sleep over, got to bed late.

Our confidence did not improve when upon our arrival we watched Altrincham’s Under 7s warming up using tackling bags! With hardly a blade of grass in sight it was not long before our guys were covered in mud, not even their studs could guarantee a slip free run. However we needn’t have worried about the LATE-NIGHT-ITIS as we witnessed some of the best play of the season and all the squad performed brilliantly. The  tagging was superb as was the ball handling, with the ball being passed and caught while on the run for glory.

Special mention must be made of all the crew -:

Ben ‘Stormer’ Pilkington made his debut away performance and to watch him you would not have known that he had only been playing for a few weeks, he did not put a foot wrong. Well done!

Alex ‘Swerver’ Gaughan made the run of the season when out-smarting the opposition’s defence, with not just one side step and dummy but several. The Altrincham boys were left standing or flat on their faces in the mud.

Alex ‘ Side Step’ Lang created opportunities, was always ready in support to take that ball over the line,  and deserved the honour of being awarded Player of the Week and Man of the Match – shared with Alex ‘Swerver’ Gaughan.

Joe ‘Forrest Gump’ Delaney, in spite of suffering a nasty tackle, was exceptional in attack, fearless in defence and his usual speedy self.

Morgan ‘Dodger’ Rees was always where the action was and made some amazing tags and unbelievable trys.

Nathan ‘Persuader’ Hardman had some fantastic runs, passed out to the wingers before he got tagged and  created so many trys by doing so.

Paul ‘Power House’ Chinn kept his cool, used his head, and took every chance open to him, demonstrating  huge talent and style.

Will ‘ Lightning’ Johnson was his customary brilliant self and showed again why he so deserves the title of Lightning. There’s just no stopping him!

Jack ‘ Conqueror’ Brennan, despite receiving a painful knock, defended and attacked brilliantly, supporting his team throughout.

Tom ‘Steam Roller’ Herring showed his dynamic flair and ball handling skills. Nobody got past him.

We could have given medals to all our players this week. We are so proud of their performance. Thanks again to all the parents/guardians and carers who make sure the gang are fed, watered, kept warm and turn up on time not only to matches but training.

Our presentation day will be Sunday 11th May, at Green Lane and will follow our final training session of the season. Trophies will be presented and the Club will be putting on a spread for us all. We hope you can make an afternoon of it with us – yes the bar will be open!!!
