Under 9s - 16.11.08

Ormskirk under 9s lined up for their first home game against Ruthin, the
visitors from just across the Welsh border bringing both a top reputation and a
strong rugby playing tradition.

Kirk won the toss and from the start the home team scrum half Owen Travis
dummied the Ruthin defensive line and ran through a gap he made (wide enough to
drive a bus through) to score the first try of the game. This unfortunately
gave the Ormskirk players & supporters alike a false sense of what was to
come and what followed was an object lesson in rugby attack and defence. Ruthin
played superb flowing rugby going on to score 5 tries in the first period
many following excelent mauling and stealing the ball from the less experienced
home side. Kirk did score another try before half time following a powerful
barging run by Granty (Matthew Grant) who lost the ball behind the Ruthin try
line after having it ‘ripped’ from him, only to take it back & score a
memorable try.

The second half was more of the same with the visitors taking the score a
maximum (35 points) and Ormskirk scoring only one further try in response,
another from a re-start by scrum half Travis who again ‘threw’ an outrageous
dummy sending the defence the wrong way & opening up a gap for him to skip
through to score in the corner carrying a Ruthin defender on his back for the last
couple of meters. All in all a great lesson for our brave boys most of whom
have only played once before & one who was playing his first ever game, it’s
given us lots to work on in training especially keeping our shape when both
going forward and defending.

Squad, Owen, Matty (E), Charlie, Brad, Joe, Ben, Granty, Adam, Eddie, Liam,
Christian.

Try scorers, Owen (2) Granty. Second game, Owen, Eddie.

‘Player of the week’ trophy awarded to Liam. (voted by the parents)

Roscoe Travis.
