Under 9s Take 1st Victory - 14th December 2008

Posted by: Monty on Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Ormskirk under 9s went to Waterloo on Sunday to be greeted by the strongest
of opposition (in terms of numbers) with 19 players at their disposal, ‘Kirk
only just making the minimum 8 so no rest for anyone on the visiting side.

The first (main) game was proof that our boys have learned from previous
mistakes in the defence department with many excellent tackles keeping a very
strong side down to a full time score line of 3 tries to nil which given the
strength of Waterloo was a very respectable result, with Ormskirk coming very
close to crossing the line on a number of occasions.

2nd game, Another close and hard fought affair but this time ‘Kirk prop
‘Granty’ (Mathew Grant) did cross the try line once with one of his trademark
long distance barging runs, the game ending with a final score of 4 tries to 1.

3rd game, This was an altogether different game to the previous 2 encounters
with a much more coherent team performance, the ‘clearing out’ at the ruck
area in particular showing fantastic improvement securing just about all of
our own ‘rucked’ ball. (even receiving praise in this area from a Waterloo
coach!!) Ormskirk opened the score in this game with a well worked try from a
blind side move from a scrum by scrum half Owen Travis, this was followed by two
tries in quick succession from the home side leaving Waterloo leading 2 - 1
at the interval.

The second period was more end to end stuff with Ormskirk scoring two
fantastic tries from their own half, one from ‘Granty’, and one from Eddie
(Peverley). Waterloo responded with a well worked move from their own half to level
the score and within seconds had crossed the line again with only minutes to
go leaving Ormskirk a small mountain to climb. But ‘climb’ they did with Eddie
scoring the try of the match from well inside his own half, in the last few
seconds scrum half Travis ‘picked up’ from a ruck made a run from the halfway
line only to be ‘held up’ over the try line to earn us a scrum. The referee
gave Ormskirk the scrum calling it “the last move of the game”, lining up an
attacking move scrum half Travis (with winger ‘Matty’ in support) cheekily
went for the blind side again but this time wasn’t do be denied his 2nd try of
the game, helping Ormskirk under 9’s to their first, and very well deserved
win.

Result Waterloo 4 tries Ormskirk 5!!

Despite this not being the main game of the encounter, our lads went home
bolstered by their first victory against a very strong club, (in terms of
manpower, skill and experience) well satisfied with a very strong team performance
from each and every player, particularly in defence.

Team, Granty, Eddie, Matty, Tom, Owen, Christian, Bradley, Joe.

Tries, Eddie 2, Owen 2, Granty1. (Granty also scored a try in the 2nd game)

“Player of the Week” Bradley. (voted by Ormskirk the coaches)

Ross.
