Ormskirk 4th XV 15 Bury 3rd XV 5
20th January 2007

Ormskirk 4th team continued their current run of good form by notching up another win - beating Bury at home this weekend. This win cextends kirk’s unbeaten 2007.

Bury arrived with what appeared to be a strong team with big forwards. This was matched though by ‘kirk who - having lost the toss - started the game playing into the wind and sunshine. It was this that urged kirk on, knowing that they had to be on the very top of their game from the start. Kirk didn’t disappoint and began the game very strongly. From the start kirk’s pack imposed themselves on the visitors. Ormskirk dominance in the scrums allowed hooker Dave Jonsson the opportunity to steal an impressive nine against the head. Kirk’s back row of Paul Doyle, Dave Worthington and Colin Sinclair worked tirelessly and made life tough for the visitors.

With the forwards creating the platform, kirks backs were allowed time and space to carve opening in the Bury defence. With centres Matthew Waterhouse and Ged Dawson making punching runs at the bury backline, this allowed Andrew Montrose to step in off the wing and cause untold problems for Bury. Ormskirk’s first try came after some good work from their forwards, who had gained valuable ground through some strong driving in the maul. The ball was then shipped to the backs where Charlie Gray continued with some strong running, he then off loaded to Jonsson who drew his tackler before releasing the ball to Winger Justin Lyon who had the easiest job to do……. Run 25 yards to the try line without any pressure from Bury defence. Lyon’s and kirk’s second try came shortly after and in very similar fashion to the first, again scoring in the corner, this time after some more excellent interplay between forwards and backs, and a good sweeping move across the back line. Ormskirk didn’t have it all their own way though and Bury did have moments in the half when they pressured kirks defence. Just as the half time whistle was due to blow, Bury’s winger chased a long kick from their fly half which hadn’t made touch. The bounce of the ball was kind to Bury as their winger collected the ball and scored. HT 10-5.

With the wind advantage in the second half, the Gingerbread Men came out with the idea of utilising the wind by releasing the speedy wingers to apply more pressure on the visitors. With the majority of the second half being played in the Bury half of the field, kirk struggled to find their way through the bury defence, and should’ve scored a lot more points. As it was, the home team managed just one more try, courtesy of a good off-load from Mark Fletcher to second row Neil Buxton….the big man showed sleight of hand and popped the ball up to the on-rushing Montrose who dived over to secure the win. A solid performance from the 4ths, and a good display of Club spirit.
Full time 15-5
